Considering a Divorce?

Jose Silva Jr Divorce Attorney

One of the most stressful and saddest moments in a person’s life is going through and enduring the pain and agony of a divorce. It is painful and not an easy endeavor. I know, as I too have experienced the painful tragedy of a divorce. The dark cloud is immense and daunting. Here are a few tips on preparing for the impending divorce process before your consultation with me:

  • Get help from a professional counselor, with whom you can speak on a weekly basis. Yes, it will cost you money, but you will need their professional services.
  • Gather all financial information. I suggest the last three (3) years of federal and state income tax returns. Each tax return should have W-2 and/or 1099.
  • Marital expenses while married and if separated are important to provide. Eventually, you will fill out a Case Information Statement (CIS), but knowing your expenses is very important.
  • Child custody of your children may be an issue. I will need the name(s) of the children born of the marriage, the school or college they attend, and the cost for each.
  • Mortgages on home(s) or finance agreements for automobiles or personal property should be provided, as well.
  • If domestic violence has been an issue, I will need a copy of every temporary restraining order and a final restraining order. Should you have police reports, please provide them as well.
  • Employer-provided pension plan or 401K, IRA, or equivalent information is essential to have.
  • This is an ongoing list of necessary items. Other items will be necessary, but dependent on your specific case.

We are here to help you through this difficult process. Please call us at 856-692-7400.
